ABOUT BREAKFAST WITH DAD

This is Breakfast With Dad, a collection of devotions on books of the Bible that I send out to over 150 friends and family members. I hope you will take time to read the most recent blog and maybe one of two from past offerings. If you have an interest in studying the Bible or have been thinking about starting a daily devotion, this would be a good place to begin. I started writing these devotions when my youngest son moved away from home and was having a hard time in his life. I used to fix him a hot breakfast every morning before school, so I decided to send him spiritual food instead to encourage his heart. I hope these "breakfasts" encourage you.

Hebrews 10:26-31

Hebrews 10:26-31 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Are you an enemy of God? Do you love him? How committed are you to him? The infrastructure of love is commitment, allegiance, and service. If you say you love God, but your life displays only worldliness and self-love, how can the love of God be in you? If a man says he loves his wife and children, but lives a self-willed, adulterous life, how can he honestly profess a deep and abiding love for his family. James says, show me your faith, or your love for God, by your works. Jesus said, No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Love for God is not words, not talk, not worship; it is an abiding devotion to him, immutable faithfulness to him. An abiding love prefers God's will and God's plans over selfish desires. Jesus our Lord demonstrated love by doing the Father's will, by living a righteous life, and by taking no thought for his life. He revealed clearly that true love perseveres, endures to the end.

As Christians we love God with all our heart, understanding, and strength. When we deliberately sin, we break the covenant of love that was established with God through Christ. If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left. By continuing in a state of sin and ignoring God, we discount his plan of salvation; we separate ourselves from Jesus and his works. When we flout the love and mercy of God by intentionally sinning and failing to repent, we trample the work of the cross under our feet. When we throw God's love, Jesus Christ, back into his face, we place our will above God's will. This lifestyle of overt, incessant sinning stands in great danger of God's judgment. He will not allow us to trample the loving sacrifice of JESUS CHRIST under our worldly feet. We cannot constantly reject Jesus Christ's love and continue on in the love of God. Jesus, God's perfect Lamb, keeps us from the judgment of God; He alone protects us from the wrath of God. When we misuse Jesus by failing to submit to his power and authority, we fall under the power of God and his authority, AND THAT MEANS JUDGMENT. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. It is a sad thing to face judgment when God's plan is life eternal with him through Christ our Lord.

Dear breakfast companion, I do not want you to fall into fear, for God loves you with an everlasting love through his beloved son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is love, and as long as you cling to him, you will always be in God's presence, in a position of perfect love. But if you abuse and misuse Jesus Christ's work on the cross by willfully sinning, if you don't appreciate the preciousness and value of his love, you make his life in you of none affect, for you consistently put him to an open shame. You literally crucify him again by confirming to the godhead and to the world that his work is not worth much. Such carnality and lack of commitment will divorce him from your life. As everything else takes precedence over him, Jesus will become incidental to your life. No longer will you abide IN CHRIST, but in self. Otherwise, you will love this world more than you love him. Jesus said, you cannot love two masters; you cannot completely serve yourself and then serve God. Right now, at this table, you are serving one master, Jesus Christ. This morning you are asking God to give you enough strength to serve him today. He will do what He has promised. Will you sin? Maybe, but He is still your master. Are some of your actions willful? Probably, but since you desire him more than yourself, more than the world, He is your Lord. God reads you from the inside out, knowing the intents and purposes of your heart. YOU ARE PERFECT IN CHRIST; therefore, love and serve him unreservedly.
